How come public free paper shredding events are not available year round in some parts of the country?
Demand for free shredding events remains strong through the year in most places. Contrary, to what you may believe, the work crews, volunteers and shredding trucks are tough enough to function 12 months a year. They are prepared to complete their document destruction tasks in heavy rain, deep snow, unbearable cold and extremely hot weather. (The one exception can be gusty winds. Windy days present special security/confidentiality challenges as papers are transported from their owners’ vehicles to mobile shredding trucks.)
The issue is this. Are the members of the general public prepared to withstand the extremes?
Depending on the region and to what the local community is accustomed, some event sponsors and shredding companies suspend free shredding and electronics recycling events when the weather is bad or when temperatures reach extremes.
It is not uncommon for the most popular shredding events to attract hundreds of people who are sometimes asked to stand in line for long periods of time before their confidential personal papers are retrieved and destroyed. Combine this with the fact that free shredding events attract a disproportionate number of senior citizens, you can begin to understand the wisdom of being conservative.
By being sensitive to weather conditions, event sponsors help preserve the health and well being of those members of the public who attend their events.
